Superformance GT40 Mk II - GT40P2155
The Superformance replica of a 1966 Ford GT40 MkII. This particular model won Lemans, over Ferrari, 1-2-3 in 1966.
Hi-Tech Automotive builds the cars in South Africa and they are marketed by Superformance. The specifications...
I ordered my car in July 2006 (after having driven Dennis Olthoff's car). It arrived in the USA at Olthoff Racing in North Carolina in December of 2006. The car came complete except for the engine and transaxle. I took a Pantera ZF transaxle and had it modified (flipped) to fit the GT40. Gear ratios are the same (with a 4:22 final drive) except for a .642 5th gear.
Here's the ZF ready to go.
The engine...
It was custom built and dyno'd prior to delivery.
Specs are:
SVO iron block, 9.5" deck height, forged crankshaft 4.0" stroke
Total displacement is 427 cu. in.
Crane custom roller hydraulic cam
SVO 6049B aluminum heads - ported intake/exhaust, CC'D combustion chambers, decked
Stainless steel valves, new valve springs, guide plates, rocker studs, Crane Gold roller rockers
Ford Motorsports valve covers
Camshaft specs
It was initially delivered with a matched SVO M9424-W351 intake and 4 bbl carb.
Dyno results are here.
Some pictures of some of the parts prior to assembly....
A picture sent by Dennis Olthoff prior to arriving and picking it up.
And another picture of GT40's in front of Olthoff's. Mine is the titanium MkII.
The red MkII belongs to Dennis and I think the titanium MkI belongs to Daryl Adams.
And pictures of picking it up in North Carolina can be seen here.
How about a couple of movies that Dylan took while I was backing out of the garage? With a carburetor.... A short version of 25MB and a long version of 54MB.
After driving it for a couple of months and fixing some issues... Wiring mistakes on the front harness, crap in the gas tank which kept plugging the fuel filter, front sway bar had to be modified, and some other stuff, I went ahead with the EFI installation that I had planned.
Electromotive TEC3r ECU, custom individual runner (IR) manifold, TWM throttle bodies, Bosch injectors, TWM linkage. Since the block was 9.5", an IR manifold wasn't readily available, so one was made for me by Kelly Coffield.
Here's a couple of initial pictures of my intake manifold (serial #2) sitting on another engine. (pics courtesy of Kelly Coffield)
In progress pictures of the EFI are here. It was quite a job... GT40's are very small cars with not a lot of room for 'other stuff'!
I then I had to trouble shoot a bad harness... That took a long time and was very frustrating!
More pics of the car almost one year later....
The 15" wheels with the Avons are OK, but not what I'd call a great street tire, so I got the 17" wheels from Vintage Wheels.
I now have them on with Michelin Pilot Sports II. Fronts are 245/40, rears are 335/35.
I went to Road America in July 2009 to attend the 45th Anniversary of the GT40. Excellent event!
I went with Jack Houpe and Mike Trusty and we met up with Darryl Adams with his car.
Some pictures of that event... We unloaded at the hotel and lined up.
The Superformance area on Saturday. Pretty impressive!
And then we got to go out on the track in Group 11. All GT40s. Historic and 'post historic'.
Lots of pictures available on the Superformance website and elsewhere, so here are some of me.
Guess who I'm sitting next to?!!! The car that won Le Mans in 1966. I like this picture.
Some pictures out on the track, etc.
And last, but not least, some of the guys.
Dennis Quella, Kirby Schrader, Darryl Adams and Mike Trusty
Kirby, Darryl and Mike on the grid.
Darryl Adams and Jack Houpe.
A very large video taken during our visit to Road America. It's 264MB, so be aware....
It includes shots of the majority of the GT40's on the track as well as some with Dennis Olthoff racing in Group 5.
In October 2010, I took the car to Texas World Speedway, but I had serious problems with my fuel system. Turned out that my swirl tank was too small. Jack Houpe made me a custom tank that fits nicely into the cavity behind the driver and all is well.
In January 2012, the local Pantera club, Space City Panteras, joined the Ferrari and Lamborghini clubs at Houston Motorsports and I drove the GT40 there and back and had some fun on the track. Managed to spin the car twice.
